We literally had things in MechCommander like superior (and honestly fun) multiplayer modes than this game has when online gaming was pretty much brand new.
MECHCOMMANDER 2 OMNITECH UNLIMITED CREDITS FULL
MechCommander even had full motion video cutscenes with live actors/cutting edge CG (for it's era) and even had video mission briefings at times with full readouts on what you're going in to do and things you need to be on the lookout for. It had loads more tech (of course, the timeline had something to do with this - but it still had more content in this area), it actually ran better, the combat wasn't so RNG heavy leading to one sided routs, the game allowed you to take THREE LANCES of mechs and was able to function fine with this. Your line of sight and sensor ranges were dynamic based upon movement speeds, elevation, equipment, etc. You could literally start forest fires to gain battlefield advantages in positions and so forth. You could tactically power down your mechs (preventing the enemy sensors from picking up their power signatures) and lead enemy into ambushes. You could call in airstrikes, so could your enemy. You could repair your mechs in mech bays out in the field. You could capture enemy structures, gate and turret control systems to turn the tables on the enemy with a well planned sneak attack. You could capture components and salvage them out in the field, giving you something else to do on missions. MechCommander had loads of features this game lacks including solid multiplayer game modes for up to 3v3 matches with things such as capture the base. Hopefully they fix this mess and it surpasses it, but as things are now they have a long way to go. That game was timeless and still the best entry in the Battletech strategy genre. I truly, deeply, wish this game were like MechCommander.
